Building My Own Custom Bank Screener
My original intent for this week’s post was to run a screen for banks based on this post from Tim Melvin, and report on the top results. Then I got distracted….
Working with my buddy Claude, I built a custom screener that pulls from the free FDIC BankFind Suite API. I don’t know why I didn’t build something like this sooner. Right, I didn’t have Claude. Anyway…
The screener does two main things:
It lets you search the FDIC’s database of 4000+ banks based on criteria you define from the available data points.
Allows you to dig into a specific bank starting at any point in time. It’ll populate charts/graphs and give you five years + two quarters of financial history in the UBPR format.
A couple of notes:
This tool searches the FDIC database, which is a repository of bank financials. Many banks are owned by holding companies, so be careful about differences between the two (holding company debt funding a clean-looking bank, for example).
You’ll need to run the file on a desktop.
You might need to allow permissions to access the FDIC API.

I’m already thinking of adding 10 years of financials with common sizing, and creating more of the UBPR sections. But I’d like to try it out for a while before going too deep into redesigning it.
